MOH.ITO

the second CD

Congratulations to Flavio, Jordi and his musicians for this new CD by the Banda de Gaites La Raitana. In it, one can find new musical flavours mainly due to the less traditional instruments which have been used such as synthesizers and a metal section.  It is due to this new style that they come close to that of the Bretons “bagadou” who are so fond of blending. They thus, reach a new dimension enabling them to have a wider audience who, in turn, will be able to discover this wonderful instrument, the bagpipes.

Long live La Banda de Gaites La Raitana. We are now waiting for their next CD which, perhaps, will include ... Breton music?

Patrick Molard

  Breton piper

This CD is dedicated to the memory of Jairo García, Igor Medio and Carlos Redondo who lost their lives in a tragic road accident. We would like to thank them for their support. They have our deepest sympathy.

Towards the end of 2002, La Banda de Gaites La Raitana edited their first recorded work De la Revuelta a la Marea. Their work confimed that  they were set on an experimental path with new tunes including harmonic and percussion games. The result was something different to what most Asturian bands are offering. In this second CD, they have kept faithful to their original path and under the direction of Jordi .... go deeper still into the new sounds, instrumentation and tunes. This, nontheless, does not mean they loose sight of their main aim, which is to create 21st Asturian music whose roots is in our tradition.

The musical directing has been carried out by Jordi and Flavio. This last recording took place between the years 2004 and 2006 at the Luna Studios in Lugo de Llanera, with the exception of Gaztelugatxeko Martxa and Muñera Asturiana which were recorded at the Bunker Studios in Posada de Llanera. The tunes Habanera Guajira y Nuberu were recorded live at the theatre room in Cajastur, in Mieres and at the Museum of Cider in Nava.

The CD also indludes a video clip called La Raitana, apuntes d'una banda de gaites: a short documentary on the preparations and rehgearsals that took place previous to the recording. Notes taken in 2004 by Ramón Lluis Bande, Vera Robert, Juan Luis Ruiz, José Braña and Luis Rivaya. The stages are those of the youth hostel in Pintueles (Piloña), the Museum of Cider (Nava)and the Theatre Room of Cajastur (Mieres) .

We would like to thank the Banda de Gaites Tabladar as well as all the musicians who helped us make the recording. A very special thank you to Ramón Prada and Javier Tejedor for the music they wrote and recorded in this CD. And last but not least, a warm thank you to Mari and Alberto for making us the best bagpipes in the world.

"DE LA REVUELTA A LA MAREA"

our first CD

“I would like to congratulate Flavio and the "Banda de Gaites La Raitana" on producing a CD (De La Revuelta a La Marea) that is not only magic to listen too, but also and more importantly, something all concerned can be proud to be part of its creation. Well done all. Thank you very much for this honour and for the great CD.”

Michel Murphy

(Twice winner of the Macallan Trophy for Scottish Pipes at Lorient & Pipe Mayor of the Irish band “Carrigaline Pipe Band”)

At the beginning of the CD you can find this quote where Michael Murphy congratulates the “Banda de Gaites La Raitana” on making something different to what we are used to.

De la Revuelta a la Marea —the title of our first CD— refers to two villages that are connected by a narrow road with sharp bends. The disc represents a new way to understand the music of pipe bands. It moves away from the standard where only pipes and drums are heard. We make a stand for a pluralism to enable Asturian pipe music, apart from its serious side, to continue its cheerful, suggestive, and above all festive tradition.

In some tunes we are accompanied by well known musicians:

  • Leonel Duarte (percussion and drums)

  • Julio Gómez (trombone)

  • Javier González (bass drum)

  • Baldomero Gutiérrez (saxophone)

  • Miguel Herrero (trumpet)

  • Igor Medio (bouzouki)

  • Aitor Miyares (accordion)

  • Ramón Prada (keyboard)

  • Lisardo Prieto (fiddle)

  • Iván Rodríguez (trumpet)

  • Alfonso Vega (bass and clarinet)

  • Polyphonic Choir of Piloña (directed by Patricia Miriam Martínez)

  • Grupo de Percussäo ‘Tocándar’ (directed by Paulo Tojeira)

The music output was made by Jordi F. Boltá and Flavio R. Benito. Most of the tunes were recorded live in the Cider Museum in Nava of May 2002. The rest of the tunes were recorded in the studio “La Factoría” in Piedras Blancas between July and October of 2002.

The disc was launched in the Auditory of Oviedo in December 2002. This date is doubly special for us because for the first time we wore our new clothes. These clothes are based on the traditional Asturian clothes: the girls use a design which was reproduced from a photograph of the very beginning of the 20th century found in Piloña and the boys wear a design based on the clothes of that period.

We would like to thank all the people who helped La Raitana to grow up and to record this CD, especially those who were members of our band at any time.
